How to Keep Your Gutters Clog-Free All Year

Gutters are easy to forget until water starts pouring over the side during a storm. Here's how to keep them working properly year-round.

Clean Them Twice a Year, Minimum

Late spring and late fall are the key windows, after trees have dropped seeds or leaves. Homes surrounded by trees may need a mid-summer check too.

Install Gutter Guards

Mesh or screen guards cut down significantly on debris buildup and stretch the time between cleanings, though they still need occasional inspection.

Check the Slope

Gutters should slope slightly toward the downspouts, roughly a quarter inch for every 10 feet. A gutter that's pitched wrong will pool water instead of draining it.

Watch for Sagging Sections

Gutters pulling away from the fascia board are usually a sign of loose hangers or water damage behind the gutter, not just a debris problem.

Extend Your Downspouts

Make sure water is being carried at least 3 to 4 feet away from the foundation to prevent basement leaks and soil erosion.
