Preparing Your Property for Storm Season

Storm damage is often worse than it needs to be simply because a few preventable weak points weren't addressed beforehand. Here's what to check before storm season arrives.

Trim Trees and Branches

Remove dead or overhanging branches near the roof, windows, and power lines. These are among the most common causes of storm damage.

Secure Loose Outdoor Items

Patio furniture, planters, and decorations can become projectiles in high winds. Plan where you'll store or anchor them.

Inspect the Roof

Look for loose, missing, or curling shingles. A roof that's already compromised is far more likely to leak or fail during a storm.

Check the Sump Pump

Test that it's working properly and consider a battery backup in case of a power outage during heavy rain.

Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Blocked gutters cause water to back up under roofing and around the foundation exactly when you need drainage the most.

Reinforce Garage Doors

Garage doors are one of the more vulnerable points on a home during high winds. Bracing kits can add meaningful extra strength.

Review Exterior Drainage

Make sure water flows away from the foundation and that any drainage channels or French drains aren't clogged with debris.

A weekend spent on these checks is far less disruptive than dealing with storm damage after the fact.
